Mr. Nathan Cook "Above" & Mr. George Conner "Right"

Mr. Nathan Cook was the Last Spanish American War Veteran of Arizona. He served as a cabin boy in the Philippine-American War and died in 1992; buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. Besides the Philippine-American War he also saw service in the Boxer Rebellion, Mexican Border Wars, WWI, and WWII.


Mr. George Conner is buried in the Hi Jolly Cemetery and during the Spanish-American War served in the Army and the Navy. During his time in the Navy, he was recommended for the medal of honor for saving 3 of his drowning shipmates. After the Spanish American War, George Conner joined the Texas Rangers and later was employed in filming the Mexican Revolution, which he later participated in! George Conner would later join a cowboy show and become a silent movie star and a founding member of the Screen Actor's Guild.

James A. Shea

Mr. James A. Shea is the namesake for Shea Boulevard in Arizona. A road so long and busy today that is transcends multiple cities including Phoenix and Scottsdale. Shea a veteran of the Spanish American War, served with the Arizona Territorial Infantry, and later became a real estate magnet. Proud of his service he would participate heavily with the United Spanish War Veterans and become Commander of the Phoenix Camp #1, United Spanish War Veterans from 1934-1935. At the end of his life Mr. Shea was known as one of the last members of the Camp and donated many of its materials to the State for archival purposes.
